Jerko Rukavina of Vidovgrad, Prince of Ražanac, was a prominent member of one of Lika’s most distinguished families and one of the earliest Croatian officers in the service of the Habsburg Monarchy in the 17th century. His life, marked by military discipline and patriotism, was deeply intertwined with the history of the Military Frontier.
According to some accounts, Jerko was born in Ražanac and began a long tradition of military service within the Rukavina family. From an early age, he chose a military career that took him through a range of assignments in the struggle against the Ottomans.
His exceptional courage, strategic insight and devotion to duty secured his rapid advancement. Although his career was tied to the imperial army, Jerko Rukavina never forgot his Croatian roots.
Jerko Rukavina embodied the combination of Lika tradition, frontier discipline and noble status earned through service and merit. His name remains part of Croatian military and noble history as an example of a successful officer who proudly carried the name of his homeland.
