Miroslav Vukelić – Mesalov was one of the most important pioneers of Croatian puzzling (zagonetaštvo) and a prominent cultural figure from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. He was born around 1851 in Karlobag as the first of four children to Petar and Francika Vukelić. He spent his childhood and youth in Senj, a town that strongly marked his intellectual and cultural development. Growing up in a large family of modest means shaped his perseverance, diligence, and inclination towards working with words and thoughts.

Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to creating riddles, rebuses, and mind games, for which he is permanently remembered. Under the pseudonym Mesalov, he published his works in numerous newspapers and magazines. It is estimated that he devised tens of thousands of puzzles, thus laying the foundations of modern Croatian puzzling. His work was recognized for its ingenuity, linguistic precision, and encouragement of readers to think and be creative.

He created a large number of puzzles (about 20,000), of which approximately 1,500 were published in the newspapers and magazines of the time. His puzzles were diverse in form and difficulty, often imbued with wit, wordplay, and clever logic. They were published in periodicals that played an important role in the cultural and social life of that era, whereby Mesalov significantly contributed to the popularization of puzzles among a wide circle of readers. Although a large part of his oeuvre remained unpublished, this exceptional creative scope testifies to his dedication, imagination, and tireless work.

In his later years, he faced severe health problems, including almost complete loss of sight, but even then, he did not stop creating. He dictated puzzles to family members and students, showing exceptional persistence and dedication to his calling. He passed away in 1925, leaving behind a rich intellectual legacy.

Miroslav Vukelić – Mesalov is considered the founder of the Croatian puzzling tradition today, and his work continues to hold an important place in the history of cultural and literary creation.
