Miroslav Vukelić-Mesalov was one of the most important pioneers of Croatian puzzle-making and a prominent cultural figure at the turn of the 20th century. He was born around 1851 in Karlobag, the eldest of four children of Petar and Francika Vukelić. He spent his childhood and youth in Senj, a town that profoundly shaped his intellectual and cultural development. Growing up in a large family of modest means fostered his perseverance, diligence and fascination with words and ideas.
Throughout his life, he devoted himself to creating puzzles, rebuses and other intellectual games, for which he is still remembered. Under the pseudonym Mesalov, he published his work in numerous newspapers and magazines. He is estimated to have devised tens of thousands of puzzles, helping to lay the foundations of modern Croatian puzzle-making. His work was noted for its ingenuity, linguistic precision and ability to encourage readers to think creatively.
He created an exceptionally large body of puzzles—around 20,000 in all—of which approximately 1,500 were published in contemporary newspapers and magazines. His puzzles varied widely in form and difficulty and were often characterised by humour, wordplay and inventive logic. They appeared in publications that played an important role in the cultural and social life of the period, allowing Mesalov to contribute significantly to the popularisation of puzzles among a broad readership. Although much of his work remained unpublished, the remarkable scale of his output testifies to his dedication, imagination and tireless creativity.
In his later years, he faced serious health problems and almost complete loss of sight, yet he did not stop creating. He dictated puzzles to family members and pupils, demonstrating remarkable perseverance and devotion to his vocation. He died in 1925, leaving behind a rich intellectual legacy.
Today, Miroslav Vukelić-Mesalov is regarded as a founder of the Croatian puzzle tradition, and his work continues to hold an important place in the history of Croatian cultural and literary creativity.
